Repetition.

Today's project: Make a photograph that features repetition.

I hadn't thought much about today's project after I first found out what it was. I realized my day was coming to an end and I knew I had to come up with something. As soon as I did, that's when my idea hit me. It was easy.

My roommate has a pool table. I simply thought about lining up all the balls and taking a picture of it. Simple, right?

Hard light shadows

Today's project: Make a photograph using hard light today. Feature the crisp and strong shadows as a major element of your photograph.

At first, I was wondering what I could do for today's assignment. I knew it had to involve shadows, obviously, but it's been a rainy day today, so there's no sun. I could use artificial light, but I really couldn't think of anything I can try.

I decided to cheat again. Third straight time, but I had a good idea on what I could use for the assignment.

I remembered a certain picture that my friend had sent me from Afghanistan when he was deployed there.

As you all know, Afghanistan is a desert, with a strong sun. He was on patrol when he brought out his camera and took a self image of his shadow. The strong sun shows the detail in his shadow, down to his weapon.

Aspect of Communication

Today's project turned out to be easy, although I must admit I'm cheating again.

This time, I decided to ask a dear friend for assistance. When I thought of communications, I instantly thought of Skype. That is where my friend comes in. He used Skype all the time to communicate with his family while being deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

My friend was gracious enough to allow me to use this particular photo that he took. He was talking with his family as his young daughter was just waking up.

Skype is a wonderful tool to boost moral for our Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen that are out there in the world serving our country. It's a great way to communicate with their loved ones.

Angels Bike Red

I'm a little late in the game, but thanks to a buddy, I'm deciding to start this project as well.

Today's theme was the color red. It didn't matter what it is, so long as it has red on it.

I'll admit, I'm kind of cheating on this first entry, but it IS a picture that I took myself... back in August 2006, though. Since it was a last minute thing that I decided to do, I went with an older picture I instantly knew had red on it.

Back when I was dating my ex, I took her to her first baseball game in Anaheim to see the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Upon leaving the stadium, we spotted this motorcycle decorated with Angels logos and coloring. Even his helmet, as you can see. If you'll notice, the exhaust pipes resemble Gatorade bottles.

Now that is a dedicated fan.

A New Beginning

Today's project (1/1): Make a photo illustrating a fresh start, a new beginning, or the first step to a goal.

It's the new year. Today begins a project that has a daily assignment, each day something new.

"Merry Christmas, My friend"

"Merry Christmas, My friend"
by LCpl James M Schmidt, USMC, 1986

Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone,
in a one bedroom house made of plaster and stone.
I had come down the chimney, with presents to give
and to see just who in this home did live.

As I looked all about, a strange sight I did see,
no tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.
No stocking by the fire, just boots filled with sand,
on the wall hung pictures of a far distant land.

With medals and badges, awards of all kind,
a sobering thought soon came to my mind.
For this house was different, unlike any I'd seen.
This was the home of a U.S. Marine.

I'd heard stories about them, I had to see more,
so I walked down the hall and pushed open the door.
And there he lay sleeping, silent, alone,
curled up on the floor in his one bedroom home.

He seemed so gentle, his face so serene,
not how I picture a U.S. Marine.
Was this the hero, of whom I'd just read?
Curled up in his poncho, a floor for his bed?

His head was clean-shaven, his weathered face tan.
I soon understood, this was more than a man.
For I realized the families that I saw that night,
owed their lives to these men, who were willing to fight.

Soon around the Nation, the children would play,
and grown-ups would celebrate on a bright Christmas day.
They all enjoyed freedom, each month and all year,
because of Marines like this one lying here.

I couldn't help wonder how many lay alone,
on a cold Christmas Eve, in a land far from home.
Just the very thought brought a tear to my eye.
I dropped to my knees and I started to cry.

He must have awoken, for I heard a rough voice,
"Santa, don't cry, this life is my choice.
I fight for freedom, I don't ask for more.
My life is my God, my country, my Corps."

With that he rolled over, drifted off into sleep,
I couldn't control it, I continued to weep.

I watched him for hours, so silent and still.
I noticed he shivered from the cold night's chill.
So I took off my jacket, the one made of red,
and covered this Marine from his toes to his head.
Then I put on his T-Shirt of scarlet and gold,
with an eagle, globe and anchor emblazoned so bold.
And although it barely fit me, I began to swell with pride,
and for one shining moment, I was a Marine Corps deep inside.

I didn't want to leave him so quiet in the night,
this guardian of honor so willing to fight.
But half asleep he rolled over, and in a voice clean and pure,
said "Carry on, Santa, it's Christmas Day, all secure."
One look at my watch and I knew he was right,
Merry Christmas, my friend, Semper Fi and goodnight.

Eternal Snow

How long has it been since I fell in love with you?
My feelings only increase
Will you notice them?
Even though I've never once put them into words?

Like the snow, they just
Quietly keep accumulating.

Hold me tight- if this is how it feels
I didn't want to know
What it was like to be in love with someone
I love you- my tears won't stop
And so I wish
That I had never met you.

How long will I be thinking of you?
My sighs fogged up the window glass.

Can a candle flame
Still melt my trembling heart?

Hold me tight, tight enough to break me
So that even in an icy wind or a blizzard
I won't feel cold
I miss you- every time I think of you
Tonight, too, I hold
This half-finished muffler, all alone.

If there was an eternally falling snow
Could it hide my feelings for you?

Hold me tight- if this is how it feels
I didn't want to know
What it was like to be in love with someone
I love you- the feeling wells up in my chest
I want to shout to the wintery sky
"I want to see you right now"

The Big Brother poem

Watching this sunset through these bars
Thinking of the part, how it seems so far.
Remembering some memories of Jerry, my Big Brother
I feel blessed knowing we share the same mother.
Taking me to Dodger games when I was just a kid
Oh how I hold him up so high, he even bought me my first mitt.
Going to Six Flags instead of going to school,
Getting on Goliath with him, how I felt so cool.
My reason to go to Los Angeles is just for him to be in my sight.
If he was in front of me now, I'd hug him with all my might.
Cheering me up when no one else did,
Beating my ass when I'd have a fit.
Now that I'm in prison, I feel alone,
Wishing I could call him just to hear "Hello!"
For he can not be replaced and I'll never ask for another
Thank you God, because I love my Big Brother
